Why are British Standards on a lock and other security products important?

Many insurance companies stipulate that locks and other security devices are fitted to a British Standard. This does not necessarily mean that the lock is a superior product, but rather it fulfils the criteria laid out by BSI. Should you have locks fitted that do not meet the criteria stated by your insurance company, you have probably invalidated the insurance policy, and will no longer be covered.
